Aquarium Tips for Tropical Fish

Aquariums are an entertaining addition to the home

Keeping fish in an aquarium at home is not a modern thing and where not just focal point at one time. They where quite a practical way of keeping food alive and fresh. In the late 1800,s aquariums’ where usually kept in costal towns where fish plentiful and readily accessible. It was easy to place the fresh live fish into a tank and eat them when ready. It is not like that today although you can still pick a fish for eating at fish restaurants, aquariums are used for personal entertainment and enjoyment. Aquariums are now a focal point in many homes and their wonderful designs and brightly coloured fish are a great addition. They can be very entertaining and can be used to keep the kids amused or in a doctors waiting room to soothe a patients nerves.

Just remember aquariums do not need constant attention. Usually children hanker after a cat or dog as there family pet, but in a busy household they can be very tying. You should consider an aquarium as an option to the cat, dog, or bird. Compared to the attention that a new puppy or kitten would need aquariums do not need constant attention. Once set up your fish can survive happily for at least a week as long as someone sprinkles a little food into the tank about twice a day. So if you want that week away with the family just ask the neighbours to pop in to feed the fish. While an aquarium does require regular care and attention it is not nearly as time consuming as caring for other pets. Once set up aquariums are not costly to run unlike your cats and dogs which require flea and tick medication, vaccinations and runs to the veterinarian when they are sick. Fish will not destroy your property like kittens and puppy’s they also do not require long walks constant attention and pet toys.

So we have stated that aquariums are a welcome addition to your home and do not require too much attention. Another great thing aquariums can do is educate children. Kids love to be involved and if caring for an aquarium is part of there chores then they will learn responsibility as well as acquainting themselves with fish care. It's amazing how much conversation can take place between a two-year old and an aquarium. Children are inquisitive and some of the questions they will ask will also keep you on your toes. Your kids can name the fish although you probably do not want twenty fish named Nimo. Children can learn their colours as tropical fish will come in allsorts of colour varieties. They can learn to count and they can learn to have conversation about what the fish are doing today. Kids can learn about the life cycle of fish, different types of fish and a little about geography as to where they come from. A fish dying in the aquarium can teach about life and death and it’s far easier for a child to cope with losing a fish as there first experience of this as a family member.

Aquariums have a calming effect and can ease your stress levels watching the fish swim smoothly round their tank. They can be a refreshing change from the TV and video games. Try turning off the TV and watch your fish instead while dining. It may bring a close family even closer together
