It is easier to prepare the tank by adding your plants at the beginning where you can allow them to become established. This serves the purpose of not allowing algae growth so quickly by utilizing the extra lighting and added nutrients. Different types of plant can be added at this time. It is recommended to use quick growing plants which you can anchor to the bottom as well as some plants that float. There are plenty of fish species that love to be out of direct light such as catfish. They will use the floating plants to there advantage and hide under it. If you have plants that are seeded you can use the new plant growth and replant it in another part of the aquarium if you desire. Remove the lower leaves of any live plants which are primarily stem plants. The reason for this is usually the bottom leaves do not stay as healthy because they do not receive the required amount of light.
Primary maintenance should be carried out weekly when you do your normal weekly aquarium maintenance. This is when you should inspect your plants and do any necessary pruning and removal of any decay. Scheduled daily weekly and monthly routines are definitely necessary if you want to keep a good looking healthy aquarium. The use of live plants will ensure your aquarium is in tip top shape and can be quite unique with your own special designs. It also makes a great stress free environment for your fish.
