Aquarium Tips for Tropical Fish

Healthy Saltwater Aquarium Care

Before buying a saltwater aquarium you must understand how to maintain it and keep your fish healthy to avoid a lot of problems. If you set up your aquarium then do not know what to do next your will probably find this mistake to be very costly. Most people would not have a clue and are unaware on how to keep a saltwater aquarium clean and healthy and research is a must before starting out. Firstly the water you use in the tank must be filtered before it reaches your tank or you could buy a reverse osmosis kit. If you use normal water it requires to have the chlorine and any other chemicals removed using special substances. The water temperature must also be correct. A planned maintenance system is a must and a scheduled cleaning of your aquarium must be completed approximately once every thirty days.  Partial cleaning of the tank can be more regular but be aware that the tank will contain bacteria which are beneficial both to the water and the fish so you must not have it removed. This beneficial bacterium is vital for maintaining an aquarium that is balanced and healthy.

Patience is required when setting up your first saltwater aquarium. Before you can even think about introducing fish the aquarium should have been set up and running for 30 days. The water should be properly balanced and requires to be tested frequently until it is right. Test strips can be bought from your local dealer for this. If you do not wait until the water is correct your new fish (which can be quite expensive) will die if the water chemical balance is not right. Once the water balance is right it should not be necessary to test so frequently as once the aquarium is stable it should stay that way. A lot of waste in aquariums settles in the substrate at the bottom of the tank and when cleaning the aquarium the gravel should be swirled around to release any waste and chemicals that can change the tank chemical makeup. Make sure that the cleaning equipment is not detrimental to the tank and harmful to the fish and use caution when cleaning an acrylic tank.

One way to stop algae build up is to use phosphate drops. A few drops added to the water will remove algae and stop it building up quickly. If you want a natural way to stop algae build up invest in some snails or hermit crabs. If you have enough of them in you saltwater aquarium they can make a massive difference in the control of algae. Snails and hermit crabs are often called the clean up crew for aquariums. If algae still builds up then it needs to be scraped off the glass using a scraper or scouring pad.

In a saltwater aquarium the head of the filter should point downwards to avoid a build up of salt on the tank cover. A good filter is necessary for a saltwater aquarium and good lighting is also a necessity. Usually you should only have your lighting switched on for about six hours per day as too much light will promote algae growth. One good investment to stop algae growth is timer for the lighting, this way the lighting is regulated. Direct sunlight is another way to promote algae growth so try to position your marine aquarium away for direct light.

Saltwater aquariums need a little more care than other aquariums the key to keeping it healthy is to regularly remove algae and clean the water. By using the different methods of keeping algae to a minimum then your aquarium should look beautiful your fish should be healthy and stress free and everyone will be happy.
