Aquarium Tips for Tropical Fish

keeping Invertebrates in Marine Aquariums

Invertebrates are not as hardy as fish however the care required for an invertebrate only tank is generally the same as any other saltwater aquarium. Usually these types of marine aquariums are not for a novice and should be left to more skilled aquarium keepers. You should check with your aquarium specialist before starting an invertebrate aquarium as invertebrates eat a different food sauce than other marine fish and this diet is specialized. The food should be readily available from your local supplier before you make a commitment to keep invertebrates. If you are keeping invertebrates in a tank with other fish make sure you get the correct type of invertebrate as they come in both tropical and cold water varieties. They should also be compatible with other tank mates.

If different invertebrates are to be kept together your marine life requires being compatible in terms of the water conditions. The following invertebrates are compatible to each other red hermit crabs, sea apple, tubeworms, and cleaner shrimps. They require water with a PH level of 8.2 to 8.4. Water temperature requirements are seventy five to seventy nine degrees Fahrenheit and a saline content of 1.020 to 1.024. The tolerances you have for your water leave very little leeway to manoeuvre with. It will be very costly if the water falls out with these measurements so they require to be checked on a daily basis. One problem with these invertebrates is although they live in the same water conditions there diets are different and need different food sources. You should check with your aquatic food supplier for compatibility with tropical invertebrates.

If you decide on cold water invertebrates they are not usually found in aquatic stores. However if you live near the sea they can be collected form local rock pools. Although you should check they are not an endangered species before removing them. They also have very specific need and research must be done before you decide to keep them. Some varieties that you can keep in a cold water aquarium include starfish, sea anemones, shrimp and prawns. The water should have a PH level of 8 to 8.4 salinity levels of 1.024 to 1.025 and a water temperature of fifty four to fifty nine degrees. These creatures will eat the same food and have a diet of squid, mussels, raw fish and shrimp broken up into small pieces.

If you want fresh food for your cold water invertebrates diet you could keep a separate tank with live specimens of the food you want to feed them. This tank could be filled with mussels, scallops, shrimps and any other food you will be feeding to your invertebrates. Another option is to use frozen foods. One problem you may have noticed is that all these invertebrates feed on shrimp, including the shrimp themselves. So be careful when keeping shrimp in your aquarium, although is not very lightly that any your invertebrates will try to eat a healthy shrimp from you aquarium. When feeding try to give just enough to be consumed in the first thirty to sixty seconds and feed them more frequently than you would other fish.

Some invertebrates feed on parasites that can be found on live rock so it may be good to include some in you aquarium. Like most aquariums a substrate should be included. Crabs and shrimps love to nestle into the substrate and bury themselves inside. If you intend on keeping anemones then it is suggested you have a light in the tank. Although invertebrates are hard to keep they will enhance you marine and freshwater aquariums and give as much joy as your other aquarium fish.
