    Tutukaka Poor Knights Islands

    The Tutukaka Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline located on New Zealand's East Coast that runs from Ngunguru Harbour in the south through to Sandy Bay in the north and is rated as one of the best destinations in Northland.

    Ngunguru is a small settlement on the east coast around 26 kms from the northland city of Whangarei it is separated from the open ocean with a spectacular low lying spit formed from the golden sand that forms the many beaches in the area the harbour is a popular place for swimming and boating.

    A short drive from Ngunguru and up and over the hill is Tutukaka a place made famous for the big game fishing that is available just of the coast during the summer months, there is accommodation available here and charter boats are available from the Tutukaka Marina.

    Tutukaka Marina is also the Departing point for the Poor Knights Islands a stunning under water sanctuary located just off the Tutukaka coastline, the islands provide a haven for many species of fish life that are abundant around the islands.

    The stunning Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk is a short drive from Tutukaka Marina accessed from Land Owners Lane at the top of the hill this walk takes you out to the rocky headland that guards the Tutukaka Harbour with spectacular views of the Middle Gable and North Gable.

    The next stop along the Tutukaka coast is the beautiful golden sandy bay of Matapouri this horseshoe shaped bay is popular during the summer months with safe swimming and snorkling from the stunning beach.

    At the northern end of the beach is the Matapouri Bay Loop Walk, this spectacular walk way takes you from Matapouri Bay along the cliff tops to Whale bay further north then loops back to Matapouri Bay through farmland there are spectacular views out to the ocean from the walkway.

    The last stop on the Tutkaka coast before the road turns inland is Woolleys Bay and Sandy Bay both these beautiful bay's are perfect for a lunch stop and offer safe swimming during the summer months, small boats can be launched from both these beaches in favourable conditions.
